IDEA TWO.
Idea: For my final major project idea, I decided to create a series of photographic work relating to the themes of the LGBTQ+ community, specifically focusing on my own story and experiences as a Transgender and Bisexual male. I thought that by focusing on this idea for my final major project I could potentially focus on portraying and documenting the process of my own transition through the use of portraiture, self-portraiture and documentary photography to both spread awareness about the existence of trans people as well as share my own experiences and stories about the transition period with my target audience.
For this idea I could look into the work of contemporary and historical photographers and artists who have also focused their work on this theme such as:
- Del LaGrace
- Catherine Opie
- Faisal Abdu'Allah
- Lia Clay
- Christian Hopkins
- Claude Cahun
- Lola Flash
Themes: For this idea I would be focusing on these themes within my photographic work. I would be focusing on the use of portraiture. self-portraiture and documentary photography, possibly combined with photo manipulation and editing techniques, in order to portray the themes of personal stories and experiences, the LGBTQ+ community and Transgender lives and the transitional period trans and nonbinary people go through both socially and medically such as getting your name legally changed, to surgeries and hormone replacement therapy (being put on Testosterone/Oestrogen).
Locations: For my photographs for this project idea I could potentially take photographs in these places:
- Studio spaces
- My house
- My bedroom
- My bathroom
- My back-garden
- Pride events in and around London
Photos Needed: For this piece of work I have decided to focus my photographic responses on portraiture, self-portraiture, and documentary with the focus of the photos mainly on myself and photo manipulation and editing techniques, to tell my own story and experiences as a Transgender and Bisexual male, either in outdoors locations like LGBTQ+ pride events in and around London, or even more private locations such as my own home or within a studio space at my university.
By focusing on creating my photographs for this idea in these locations I felt that I could easily show that you don't just need to be attending pride events to be proud of yourself and who you are but you can also be proud of yourself and be yourself in every day home situations too.
